About the Tutors
Gaetan Augustin – I was born in Mauritius and French was the language of my childhood until arriving in Australia at the age of 13.
I teach simple French phrases to assist students to navigate French speaking countries or just for the fun of learning something new. My class consists of those who wish to refresh schoolbook French or have never learnt French before in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
Marie Davidson – I am a French student at UNE Armidale and studying it for my own satisfaction. I have always been a Francophile ever since studying French at High School.
Our beginners class has two stages, the first hour where we learn about the grammar and the second hour, where we listen to French news to attune our ears to the language.
In both classes students are encouraged to ask questions about anything! including French!
We are quite happy to take anyone who comes along at any time though most of our present students continue on from Gaetan’s French Conversation class which is just before ours. We are a really friendly bunch and looking forward to seeing some new faces this term
Paulette Montaigne – Paulette is equally fluent in French and English, languages she learnt the hard way. Growing up in Vanuatu, Paulette’s first words were in the Melanesian language of Erakor Island and Bislama (or Bichelamar in French). English came from her Australian Maman and French from her New Caledonian Papa.
Paulette settled in Australia in 1982. Starting in Sydney then moving to Canberra in 1984 where she took a job at the Canadian High Commission as a locally-engaged Public Affairs and Academic Relations Officer. In 2000 she moved to France with her partner John Richardson, also a Francophile (and U3A tutor/volunteer), to work as Travel Coordinator at the Canadian Embassy in Paris, France. In 2013, Paulette and John decided to settle in Ipswich and are enjoying it. Que l’aventure continue !
About French Conversation
An informal approach to French Conversation which will include reading and comprehension, pronunciation and general discussions. Hopefully we can also organise outings with a francophone theme. Participants will be asked to contribute materials and bring along any French problems we can work on. This will be a collaborative group, so we will start with all levels until we work out the dynamics. English will not/not be banned; au contraire. This will be a first for me as I have never taught any languages however I am keen to help others who want to improve and practice their French.
For more information or to join the group contact the Tutors via the U3A Office.
